The Far North zone is situated on the Country of the Gimuy-walubarra yidi, Mamu, Djirru, Gulnay, Girramay, Bar Barrum, Gugu Badhun, Jirrbal, Ngadjon-Jii, Yidinji, Wurrungu, Kuku Yalangi, Awngthim, Malanbarra and Dulebed peoples.
The zone covers the cities and townships from Tully in the south through to Innisfail, west to Atherton, Malanda, Dimbulah and Mareeba, throughout Gimuy (Cairns) and north to Port Douglas and includes the remote township of Weipa.
Women started playing football in Far North Queensland in 1970s.
The first evidence we can find of women’s football in Far North Queensland, and this is thanks to Mark Pringle, is a match between Mareeba team played a Cairns team and the North Cairns Sports Reserve. Then the Women’s Soccer Queensland’s records note 100 players in the area had registered in 1977.
In 1989, Far North Queensland got their first player, Nella Bertoncini, into the national team.
During the 1990s Far North Queensland was a more consistent competitor in the State Championship and membership grew to 148 in the region.
Clubs currently fielding premier women’s teams are Edge Hill, United FC, Leichhardt FC, Mareeba United FC, JCU Strikers FC, Innisfail United FC, Stratford Dolphins FC and Southside Comets FC.
