Women started playing football in the Sunshine Coast during the 1970s.

Women’s football in the Sunshine Coast area appears to have started in the 1970s. Throughout the late 1970s Maroochydore held a well-attended carnival and in 1978 there were 90 female players registered in the area.

Sunshine Coast were consistent participants in the State Championship from 1978-1996, and in 1982, Narelle Sach was the first player from the Sunshine Coast to make it to the State team.

More recently, in 2019, the Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club Premier Women’s Team won the Grand Final. Sunshine Coast’s current star player, Melissa Weckert, delivered the deciding goal in extra time. You can find the current clubs fielding women’s teams on the Sunshine Coast Football website.
